This is a reproduction print of the historical map “La Grèce et partie de l’Asie Mineure depuis les temps les plus reculés jusqu’au retour des Héraclides et à l’invasion des Doriens”, created under the direction of Antoine Philippe Houze in 1844 and published in Paris by P. Duménil as part of the Atlas historique et géographique de la Grèce.
The map depicts Ancient Greece and western Asia Minor up to approximately 1190 BC, a period associated in traditional Greek chronology with the return of the Heraclides and the Dorian invasion. It presents the geography of the early Greek world, highlighting historical regions, territories and settlements.
Prominent geographical features include Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus and the Peloponnese, alongside the Aegean islands of Crete, Rhodes and the Cyclades. Ancient cities, mountains and bodies of water are carefully labeled, while hand-colored territorial divisions and a legend in the lower left corner help distinguish different historical regions.
Originally published as Carte I of Houze’s historical atlas, the map measures approximately 29 × 23 cm and uses a scale of 1:3,400,000. Its detailed engraving, delicate coloring and Paris-based prime meridian make it a distinctive example of 19th-century historical cartography devoted to Ancient Greece.
