In 1740, the Kingdom of France was one of Europe’s most powerful and centralized states, ruled by Louis XV under the Bourbon dynasty. With a large population, strong army, and extensive colonial possessions, France remained a dominant force in continental politics and was soon to play a major role in the War of the Austrian Succession.
