In 1770, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was one of the largest states in Europe but had become politically weakened by internal divisions and growing influence from neighboring powers. Within a few decades it was gradually dismantled through the Partitions of Poland in 1772, 1793, and 1795 by the Russian Empire, Kingdom of Prussia, and the Habsburg Monarchy. These partitions erased the Commonwealth from the political map of Europe for more than a century.
