Explore one of the most dramatic episodes of Polish history with this remarkable Siege of Kraków Poster, depicting the capture of the royal city during the Swedish invasion of Poland in 1655. Created by the renowned military engineer, cartographer, and artist Erik Dahlbergh, the work is titled “Cracovia Sedes Regia obsessa et à Serenissimo Sveo. Gothorum Rege Carolo Gustavo deditione capta d. 8. Octob. Anno 1655.”

This finely engraved panoramic view illustrates the siege and surrender of Kraków during the early stages of the Swedish Deluge. The city, then the historic royal capital of Poland, is shown surrounded by Swedish forces under the command of Charles X Gustav. The panorama captures the military positions, encampments, fortifications, and strategic deployments that led to Kraków's capitulation on 8 (18) October 1655.

Executed with exceptional detail, the composition combines military cartography with panoramic city representation. Swedish cavalry and infantry formations are carefully identified through an extensive legend, while the city's walls, churches, towers, and defensive structures are rendered with remarkable accuracy. Decorative elements including military trophies, banners, coats of arms, and an ornate title cartouche emphasize the prestige and political significance of the event.

Originally published in editions of Samuel von Pufendorf’s celebrated work De Rebus a Carolo Gustavo Gestis, the engraving served both as historical documentation and royal propaganda, commemorating Sweden's military successes during the reign of Charles X Gustav.

Beyond its military importance, the panorama provides a rare visual record of seventeenth-century Kraków before many later urban transformations. It offers valuable insight into the city's architecture, fortifications, and strategic importance within the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Perfect for historians, collectors, military enthusiasts, genealogists, and admirers of Polish history, this historic Kraków poster brings historical depth and artistic elegance to offices, libraries, studies, classrooms, and sophisticated interiors.
