Artist: Jean-Pierre Houël
Year: 1789

This is a reproduction print of the historical artwork “The Taking of the Bastille” (La Prise de la Bastille), created by French artist Jean-Pierre Houël in 1789. One of the most recognizable visual representations of the beginning of the French Revolution, the artwork depicts the Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, when revolutionary crowds in Paris attacked the medieval fortress and state prison that had become a symbol of royal authority under the French monarchy. The original artwork is preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris.

The composition portrays armed Parisian revolutionaries assaulting the Bastille, surrounded by smoke, gunfire and the confusion of battle. The fortress's imposing stone walls and towers dominate the scene, while crowds of insurgents gather around its defenses. The confrontation involved Parisian civilians, members of the French Guards who supported the uprising, and the prison's garrison commanded by Governor Bernard-René de Launay. The fortress eventually surrendered, marking a decisive moment in the revolutionary crisis.

Houël's artwork is particularly remarkable for its detailed architectural representation, dynamic arrangement of figures and documentary treatment of a major historical event. The artist captures the scale of the fortress and the intensity of the confrontation, emphasizing the contrast between the massive royal stronghold and the crowds attacking it. Unlike later idealized representations of the Revolution, the composition offers a vivid contemporary interpretation of the violence, confusion and popular mobilization that characterized the events of July 1789.

Executed in watercolor and gouache, the artwork was produced in the same year as the event it depicts. Although the Bastille held only seven prisoners when it was captured, its fall carried enormous symbolic importance, representing a challenge to royal absolutism and the growing power of the revolutionary movement. The anniversary of the event, 14 July, became France's national holiday. Houël's depiction remains an important visual record of the French Revolution and one of the most influential political transformations in European history.
