In 1951, Western Europe was rebuilding after World War II and increasingly aligning with the Western bloc led by the United States during the Cold War. That year also marked an important step toward European integration with the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community by countries including France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
