In 1653, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg was a prosperous and largely self-governing city-state within the Holy Roman Empire, formally subject to the emperor but exercising broad autonomy in its trade and governance. As one of the leading ports of northern Europe and a major member of the Hanseatic League, Hamburg prospered from maritime commerce in the Baltic and North Sea after the devastation of the Thirty Years' War.
